Flight safety improvement in the region is the top priority, given the considerable increases in air traffic that currently exist and are forecast for the coming years.
Receiving particular attention are Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT), Approach and Landing Accidents (ALA), Air traffic control (ATC) Incidents/Airmisses, and regional compliance with international standards.
IATA also maintains an extensive database of Air Traffic Service Incidents. It identifies causative factors and areas that require State and/or International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) action and records follow-up actions taken by IATA, as well as responses and remedial action by States.
The Safety team works closely with the ICAO North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACC) office in Mexico City and the South American (SAM) office in Lima. It also maintains working relationships with the International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations (IFALPA), the International Federation of Air Traffic Controller Associations (IFATCA) Regional Offices, and the International Association of Latin American Air Transport (AITAL).
